How to Set Up Fire TV Stick

Basic requirements

To start, have the following parts, accessories, and information ready:

  • The Fire TV Stick and in-box accessories
    • Alexa Voice Remote, USB cable, power adapter, AAA batteries for the remote, and HDMI extender cable (optional)
  • A TV with an available HDMI port
  • An Amazon account, including your email address or phone number and password
  • An internet connection, including your Wi-Fi name and password

How to set up your device

Video guide to set up your device

  1. Put the batteries into the remote.
  2. Connect the USB cable to the power adapter and the Stick.
  3. Plug in the Stick to the TV's HDMI port. Use the HDMI extender cable if it's difficult to plug the Stick into the TV's HDMI port.
  4. Plug in the power adapter to the wall. Avoid plugging the USB cable directly into the TV.
  5. Turn on your TV and switch to the correct HDMI input.

    Tip: Use the remote that came with your TV to select the HDMI source or input.

  6. Use your mobile phone to scan QR code to automatically add Wi-Fi settings and complete registration or use remote instead to set up manually.
  7. If you choose to use the remote instead, follow the on-screen instructions to connect to Wi-Fi and sign in with your Amazon account. Use your mobile phone or computer to visit the on-screen web address (amazon.co.uk/code) and enter the activation code.
  8. Follow the on-screen questions to set up equipment control for devices like soundbars.

Remote overview

Your device comes with the Alexa Voice Remote that you can use to browse your Fire TV. Use the playback buttons to play, pause, rewind, or fast forward video content or the Alexa button for voice commands. You can also use the preset app buttons at the bottom of the remote to navigate quickly to select apps.

To insert batteries, turn your remote upside down and place your thumbs on the back cover. Press firmly and slide the cover down. For best performance, use AAA alkaline batteries.

Troubleshoot setup issues

If setting up your device doesn't go as expected, try the following suggestions:

  • If you get a login error or have forgotten your Amazon account password, you can reset your password. Go to Forgot Your Password.
  • If your remote doesn't pair automatically, press the Home button until "Press Play Pause to start" appears on-screen (about 10 seconds). You can find more troubleshooting by visiting the Can't Pair Your Fire TV Remote During Setup page.
