Use Your Pen to Handwrite on Books and Personal Documents

Add an active canvas or a sticky note and write using the writing toolbar. Use writing tools such as Pen, Highlighter, Eraser, and Undo/Redo. Double tap on Pen, Highlighter, or Eraser to access custom options for those tools.

The toolbar options also allow you to place the toolbar on the left or right side of the screen.

To hide the writing toolbar across all books and documents:

  1. To display the top navigation bar, tap on the top of the screen.
  2. Tap on the 3-dot icon, and select Hide Writing Toolbar.
To show the toolbar again, go to the same 3-dot menu and select Show Writing Toolbar.

In books and compatible Personal Documents, you’re able to create active canvases or sticky notes:

To insert an active canvas:

  1. Select the Active Canvas tool Active canvas icon in the writing toolbar.
  2. Press and hold between book lines to insert the active canvas.

The active canvas inserted between lines is as wide as the text column.

You can also create a custom-size canvas simply by creating a stroke on the page. A translucent box shows with confirm or cancel buttons for insertion. The canvas keeps expanding as you keep writing before you confirm insertion.

To change a canvas size, touch the canvas frame with the pointer tool and pull the sides in or out.

To delete a canvas, touch the canvas frame with the pointer and select the trash icon on the bottom-right corner. Confirm the deletion on the dialogue that opens next.

Note: Active canvas is currently only available on Kindle Scribe, and only supports left-to-right horizontal languages. Right-to-left horizontal languages, such as Arabic, or vertical languages like Japanese, aren't supported at this time.

To insert a sticky note:

  • Select the Note option in the annotation menu that appears when you tap on a highlight or underlined text, or
  • Select the sticky note tool in the writing toolbar, and then touch the page to place your note where you want it. A note icon shows marking where you saved your sticky note. Tap on the icon to reopen the note and make any edits.
  • If you create notes in the expandable margin, they also appear in sticky notes when the margin is closed.

Your sticky notes appear in the expandable margin when the margin is open.

Tip: To view or hide the action menu after highlighting or underlining text, activate or deactivate the Annotation Menu. Select the Aa menu in the top navigation bar, and then the More tab.

Notes get autosaved after you finish writing on your sticky note canvas and tap on the X to close it.

In certain books or PDFs that you import onto your device using the Send to Kindle(https://www.amazon.co.uk/sendtokindle) service, you’re able to write notes directly on the page.

Note: The use of 3P covers may interfere with some of the screen writing areas.
