Other Reading Accessibility Settings on Fire Tablet

Turn on the Reading Ruler, switch to landscape orientation for reading, use continuous scrolling or the volume buttons to turn pages with the Kindle app.

Reading Ruler

The Reading Ruler keeps your eyes focused on the text by highlighting or blocking out certain lines. It displays a customizable bar with adjustable color, opacity, style, and size.

To turn on the Reading Ruler on a Fire tablet:

  1. Open the Kindle app and select a book.
  2. Tap at the top to bring up the toolbar and select the Aa icon while reading.
  3. Select the More tab.
  4. Select Reading Ruler and switch the toggle for Reading Ruler on.

    If you're not already in continuous scroll reading mode, you see a prompt to switch to it. Only continuous scroll reading mode supports Reading Ruler currently.

Landscape Orientation Support for Reading

Your can read Kindle books on your Fire tablet in either portrait or landscape orientation. These options allow greater flexibility in how to position your device while reading.

To activate landscape mode in the Kindle app on a Fire Tablet:

  1. Deactivate the orientation lock from the slide-down menu at the top of the screen.
  2. Rotate your Tablet to the landscape position.

Continuous Scrolling

Continuous scrolling and pagination are two optional reading modes, each of which can be beneficial based on your personal needs and preferences.

With continuous scrolling, you read your Kindle book by scrolling vertically like a webpage up/down, rather than flipping pages by swiping left/right or tapping.

To activate continuous scrolling in the Kindle app on a Fire tablet:

  1. Open the Kindle app and select a book.
  2. Open the Kindle app and select a book.Tap at the top to bring up the toolbar and select the Aa icon while reading.
  3. Select the Layout tab.
  4. Switch the toggle for Continuous Scrolling on.

Turn Pages with Volume Controls

You can use your Fire Tablet volume buttons to turn pages in the Kindle app. Using a single tap for turning pages may be more comfortable for some readers.

Note: Deactivate the Continuous Scrolling setting to activate Turn Pages with Volume Controls.

To activate this feature:

  1. Open the Kindle app and select a book.
  2. Tap at the top to bring up the toolbar and select the Aa icon while reading.
  3. Select the More tab.
  4. Switch the toggle for Turn Pages with Volume Controls on.

Pressing the volume up button advances to the next page, and pressing the volume down button goes to the previous page.

Immersion Reading with Audible on Fire Tablet

Note: This feature is available on Fire Tablets with FireOS 7 and above.

Switch between reading and listening with Audible audiobooks. Synchronized highlighting of the text is available while the audio is playing.

Immersion Reading with Audible is available on all titles in your Library where you have both the eBook and the Audible audiobook. These titles are Whispersync-for-Voice ready.

You can tell if a book has Whispersync on Audible and Amazon, the product details for an audiobook will say Whispersync for Voice-ready if it’s available. You can also look for the option to add the Audible narration on the Kindle eBook page on Amazon.

To use Immersion Reading with Audible on Fire Tablet:

  1. Open the Kindle app on your Tablet and select the book that you’d like to read and listen to.
  2. Tap on the page to invoke the option to download the Audible audiobook.
  3. Tap on the download icon at the bottom of the page.
  4. To begin listening, tap the play icon at the bottom of the page.

Customize features like narration speed from the mini player and sleep timer from the full Audible player.

You can pause the narration and switch between reading and listening without ever losing your place.

To turn off synchronized highlighting:

  1. Tap the top center of the screen, and then select the reading settings menu Aa.
  2. Select More, and then turn off Real-time Text Highlighting.
