Accessible Reading Options for Kindle Reading Apps

Books that support visual adjustments allow you to modify the appearance of the text and the page layout. You can adjust the visual appearance, which can increase readability and make it easier to comprehend the text.

Visual Adjustment Options for Kindle for Android and iOS Apps

You can access the visual adjustment options from the reading settings Aa menu in your Kindle apps for Android, and iOS/macOS.

To access the reading settings Aa menu:

  1. Open your Kindle app for Android or iOS.
  2. Open a Kindle book.
  3. Select the top center of your screen.
  4. Select the reading settings Aa menu and then choose the tab with the feature you want to adjust.

From the Font tab, you can edit:

  • Font Size: Options to increase or decrease the default font size of the text.
  • Font Type: Choose from various font styles, including Amazon Ember Bold and OpenDyslexic.
  • Spacing: Increase or decrease the space between lines of text, paragraphs, words, and characters.
  • Screen Brightness: Use the slider to adjust the screen background light from dimmer to brighter.
    Tip: You can adjust screen brightness from all four tabs.

From the Layout tab, you can edit:

  • Page Color: Choose between white, sepia, light green, and black, for different levels of contrast.
  • Dark Mode: If you use Dark mode on your device, Kindle apps for Android and iOS display Dark mode as well.
  • Continuous Scrolling: Read by scrolling vertically instead of swiping pages.
  • Margin Adjustment: Make the book margins wider or narrower.
  • Text Alignment: Choose between left-aligned or justified text.
  • Orientation lock: On some devices, you can prevent your screen from changing between Portrait and Landscape modes.

From the Themes tab, you can create a custom theme or select a preset one:

  • Custom Theme: Create your own favorite settings and save the theme. You can have multiple custom themes. Start by saving your theme with a name, and then when you change any setting, you receive the option to save the new theme.
  • Preset Theme options: Compact, Standard, Large, and Low Vision.

From the More tab, you can choose from various features to assist you with reading:

  • Real-time Text Highlighting: Highlights words while either Assistive Reader or Audible narrates your text.
  • Reading Ruler: To help guide your reading, add a colored ruler over the text.
  • Word Wise (on Android): Get simple definitions and synonyms displayed inline above more difficult words while you read.
