Kindle for Windows Keyboard Shortcuts

You can use many keyboard shortcuts to navigate the Kindle for Windows application.

Anywhere in the Application

Important: The Legacy Kindle app (previously called Kindle for PC) isn't supported as of June 30, 2026. To download the new Kindle for Windows app, go to Install or Update the Kindle App for Desktop.
  • Go to Home - CTRL, ALT, L
  • Exit the Application - ALT, F4
  • Sync - F5
  • Help - F1
  • Move focus to next enabled control - Tab

From Library

  • Move the focus to the book above the current selection - Up Arrow
  • Move the focus of the book to the right of the current selection - Right Arrow
  • Move the focus of the book to the left of the current selection - Left Arrow
  • Move the focus of the book below the current selection - Down Arrow
  • Open the context menu of the selected book - Shift, F10
  • Scroll the list of books up one page (but do not change the current focus) - Page Up

While Reading a Book

  • Next Page - Page Down or Right Arrow
  • Previous Page - Page Up or Left Arrow
  • Back - Backspace
  • Increase Font Size - CTRL, + (doesn't work on comics or content for children)
  • Decrease Font Size - CTRL, - (doesn't work on comics or content for children)
  • Bookmark - CTRL, D
  • Open Annotation Notebook (i.e. Notes) Highlights, if closed - CTRL, N
  • Close Annotation Notebook (i.e. Notes) Highlights, if opened - CTRL, N
  • Go to Location - CTRL, G
  • Close Book - CTRL, W
  • Search - CTRL, F

Using Assistive Reader

To use these shortcuts, you must enable Assistive Reader first. Press Ctrl, A or select the Tools menu and choose Start Assistive Reader.

  • Toggle Text-to-Speech - Ctrl, T
  • Pause or resume reading - Space bar (while in a book)
  • Read the previous sentence - Ctrl, Shift, Up arrow
  • Skip forward one sentence - Ctrl, Shift, Down arrow
  • Increase speech rate - Shift, +
  • Decrease speech rate - Shift, -
  • Toggle continuous reading - Ctrl, Shift, C
Note: This feature only works on eligible Kindle content. You can configure the Assistive Reader language from the System Preferences on your computer.

Navigating Within Tables (Narrator)

  • Go to the next table - T
  • Go to the previous table - Shift + T
  • Enter first cell - Tab
  • Cell to right - Right Arrow
  • Cell to left - Left Arrow
  • Cell above - Up Arrow
  • Cell below - Down Arrow
  • Next (Previous) link - K (Shift + K)
  • Next (Previous) image - G (Shift + G)
  • Exit table - Esc
Note: NVDA and JAWS support for navigating within tables is not currently available.
