Create an Occupancy Routine

Alexa can start Routines automatically by detecting when people are nearby.

Set Alexa to play your flash briefing or music when you walk into a room. Or, set a routine to turn off the lights when nobody is present.

To create an Occupancy Routine, use the Alexa app.

  1. Open the Alexa app .
  2. Open More .
  3. Select Routines.
  4. Select Plus .
  5. Select When this happens, and select Smart Home.
  6. On the Choose Device screen, select the device you want the Routine to work on.
  7. Under Do This When, select People are detected for actions when someone is present. Select People aren't detected for actions when the room is empty.
    Then select Next.
  8. Select Add action, and follow the steps in the app.
You can select multiple actions for the same routine.
  9. Select Save.

An Occupancy Routine applies to only one device. To use Occupancy Routines with multiple devices, or in multiple rooms, set a routine for each device.

Presence Detection, which uses device speakers and microphone, can detect major motion such as walking around the room. Some devices might detect minor movements, such as waving your hand, or sitting still and reading.

Computer Vision on Echo devices with a screen can determine occupancy if a person is within range of the device camera.

When using People aren't detected as the event starting your routine, the action timing varies by detection method. With Presence Detection, actions and Computer Vision, start after approximately 7 minutes of no activity.

Note: Occupancy Routines are currently available within a public preview.
