My Smart Home Device Doesn't Connect to Alexa
To troubleshoot setup or connectivity issues with your smart home device, follow the steps in the following sections.
Before You Begin
- Confirm your smart home device is compatible with Alexa. Devices with a "Works with Alexa" badge are certified to work with Alexa.
- Connect smart home Wi-Fi devices on a 2.4 GHz band.
- Verify your home internet is working. Ask your Echo device, "Are you online?"
Connecting Your Device for the First Time
- Restart your Alexa device and your smart home device by unplugging them and plugging them back in.
- Ensure your device is in pairing mode. Refer to the manufacturer's manual for instructions. Devices that require pairing mode include Zigbee, Bluetooth, and Matter.
- For third-party devices that use Wi-Fi and aren't Matter
certified, download the manufacturer's app and complete device setup. Alexa connects to your device through the associated skil.
- During setup, you may be able to link your Alexa account with your device's account in the manufacturer's app. This may automatically activate the relevant skill.
- If the skill doesn't activate during setup, enable it manually in the Alexa app.
- Download and install any available software updates for your devices.
Note: If you see "No new devices found" in the Alexa app, your device may have connected automatically through Frustration-Free Setup. Check under
Devices in the Alexa app to confirm.
Proximity and Network Requirements
| Device Type | Requirement |
|---|---|
Matter Wi-FI |
Must be on the same 2.4GHz network as your compatible Matter controller (such as a compatible Echo) |
Matter (general) |
Within 30ft (9m) of your compatible Matter controller |
Zigbee ![]() |
Within 30ft (9m) of your Zigbee hub or another connected Zigbee device |
Reconnecting a Device That Stopped Working
If your smart home device was previously connected but has stopped responding:
- Disconnect the smart home device in the Alexa app, then set it up again.
- If your device uses a skill, try controlling it in the manufacturer's app
- If the manufacturer's app works but Alexa does not, reactivate the skill in the Alexa app.
- Check your internet connection in the manufacturer's app
Still Not Working
If none of the above steps resolve the issue, reset both your Alexa device and your smart home device. For more on Alexa's Matter support and compatible devices, go to Alexa Smart Home Connectivity (https://www.amazon.co.uk/connect_to_alexa)
