About Payment Sharing in Amazon Family

Payment sharing is how Amazon verifies that adults in an Amazon Family live in the same household. When you share a payment method, it confirms your household connection.

One-way payment sharing

For all new Amazon Families, only the Family Organizer shares their payment method with one other adult member. The other adult does not need to share their payment method with the Family Organizer. This simplified model makes it easier and faster to set up your Amazon Family.

What this means for the Family Organizer:

  • Your payment method is visible to the other adult in your Amazon Family.
  • The other adult's payment method is not shared with you.
  • You maintain control over your Amazon Family settings.

What this means for the other adult invited to join the Amazon Family:

  • You can see the Family Organizer's shared payment method.
  • You do not need to share your own payment method.
  • You receive shared Prime benefits and can access shared digital content.

Two-way payment sharing (previous model)

If you created your Amazon Family before September 24, 2026, both adults may have shared payment methods with each other. This is called two-way payment sharing.

Your existing two-way payment sharing arrangement will continue unchanged until one of the following events occur:

  • A member leaving the Amazon Family and rejoining.
  • Adding a new member to your Amazon Family.
  • Removing a member from your Amazon Family.
  • Dissolving your Amazon Family entirely.

After one of these events occur, your Amazon Family will automatically transition to one-way payment sharing. This transition is permanent and your Amazon Family cannot return to two-way sharing.

Transitioning to One-Way Payment Sharing

When your Amazon Family transitions from two-way to one-way sharing:

  • The Family Organizer's payment method continues to be shared with the other adult.
  • The other adult's payment method is no longer shared with the Family Organizer.
  • All Prime benefits and digital content sharing continue without interruption.

No action is required from either member, the transition happens automatically.

About the Family Organizer Role

The Family Organizer is the adult who creates and manages an Amazon Family. When you set up a new Amazon Family or when your existing Amazon Family transitions to one-way payment sharing, one adult is designated as the Family Organizer.

What the Family Organizer can do:

  • Invite or remove adults, teens, and children from the Amazon Family.
  • Manage shared content settings through Family Library.
  • Share their payment method with the other adult. This is required for household verification.

Updating the Family Organizer role

The Family Organizer role is assigned when your Amazon Family is created or when it transitions to one-way sharing. To change the Family Organizer, you would need to dissolve your current Amazon Family and create a new one. Note that the 12-month waiting period applies before the other adult can join a different Amazon Family.

If your Amazon Family transitions from two-way to one-way sharing, the Family Organizer is assigned based on the following:

  • The member who initiated the change (for example, the person who added or removed a member).
  • The member who originally created the Amazon Family (if both members have Prime).
