Use VoiceOver with the Kindle App on iOS

The Kindle reading app for iOS supports the VoiceOver accessibility feature.

With VoiceOver turned on, audio support is provided for many books and features on your iOS device.

Note: VoiceOver was developed by Apple for the iOS operating system. For more information about using VoiceOver, go to Use VoiceOver Gestures on iPhone on Apple support.

To turn VoiceOver, developed by Apple for the iOS operating system on or off:

  1. From your iOS device Home, select the Settings icon.
  2. Select Accessibility.
  3. Under Vision, select VoiceOver.
  4. Select On or Off.

    You can also change other general settings for VoiceOver on this screen.

Use the following table to learn more about the actions and gestures available with VoiceOver:

Action Gesture Notes

Read continuously and have the pages turn automatically.

Swipe down using two fingers.

Pause or resume reading.

Tap once with two fingers.

Go to the next content element.

Swipe right using one finger.

Usually, this action refers to the next paragraph, but it can also be an image, a link, a math equation, or something else.

Go to the previous content element.

Swipe left using one finger.

Usually, this action refers to the previous paragraph, but it can also be an image, a link, a math equation, or something else.

Go to the next page.

Swipe left with three fingers.

Go to the previous page.

Swipe right with three fingers.

Open the Book Actions menu.

Double tap with one finger.

This option is only available when a book is open.

The Book Actions menu provides access to many things. This includes the close book button, the table of contents, search, notebook, reading settings, and more.

Select text.

Double tap and hold.

Navigate by characters.

Twist two fingers to access the rotor and then select Characters.

Navigate by words.

Twist two fingers to access the rotor and select Words.

Navigate by lines.

Twist two fingers to access the rotor and select Lines.

Navigate by headings.

Twist two fingers to access the rotor and select Headings.

Headings and their levels are announced and navigable when heading tags are included in the eBook.

Go to the next item in granular reading.

Swipe down with one finger.

Go to the previous item in granular reading.

Swipe up with one finger.

Navigate math content.

Twist two fingers to access the rotor and select Symbols, Small Expressions, Medium Expressions, or Large Expressions.
