What Is the Fire TV Ambient Experience?

The Fire TV Ambient Experience transforms a TV into an Alexa-powered smart display when not streaming.

Note: The Fire TV Ambient Experience isn't available on all Fire TV devices. To check if Fire TV Ambient Experience is available on your device:
  1. Select Settings .
  2. Select Display & Audio.
  3. If available, the Ambient Experience option appears in the menu.

The following table lists some of the Ambient Experience features:

Feature Description

Display curated art collections as backgrounds.

Choose backgrounds from curated art collections. You can also use your own personal Amazon Photos.

Display Interactive Art.

Note: This feature is only available on Fire TV Omni Mini-LED Series TVs.

Display artwork that you can interact with through movement. Choose from select interactive backgrounds.

Display the time and weather.

Quickly check the time and weather for your location.

Listen to audio in the background.

While enjoying background art, you can play music, podcasts, and audiobooks from providers such as Amazon Music, Audible, and Spotify.

Note: Some services require a paid subscription.

Use a selection of customizable widgets.

Display widgets on Ambient Experience. Choose options such as:

  • Calendar
  • Sticky Notes
  • Your Music
  • Smart Home Favorites
  • Live TV
  • Weather

Note: Widgets under Fire TV Mini-LED TVs are hidden by default. To show widgets in the Ambient Experience:
  1. Short press the Alexa Voice button on the remote to open the Alexa Shortcuts Panel.
  2. Select the Ambient tile to start the Ambient Experience.
  3. Press the Menu button on your remote.
  4. Select Ambient Preferences.
  5. Select Widgets at Start.
  6. Select Show.

Play audio.

If audio is playing when Ambient Experience is active, a Now Playing indicator appears on the screen. You can use the remote to pause the music or say, "Pause music."

To open the full-screen audio experience, select the audio player with the remote. To return to the Ambient Experience, say, "Return to Ambient," or short-press the power button.

Activate and Deactivate the Ambient Experience

You can activate the Ambient Experience in several ways:

  • Alexa Voice button: Short press the Alexa Voice button on the remote to open the Alexa Shortcuts Panel. Select the Ambient tile to start the Ambient Experience.
  • Home button: Press and hold the Home button on the remote to open the Quick Settings menu. Select the Ambient tile to start the Ambient Experience.
  • Voice: Say, "Go to Ambient Experience."
  • Schedule or Routine: Set up Routines for Ambient Experience in the Alexa mobile app. The Ambient Experience Advanced Settings include the ability to set the hours when Ambient Experience is available.
  • Idle timeout: Ambient Experience replaces the default screensaver experience and starts after the screensaver advertisements.

Ambient Experience deactivates after:

  • You press the Home button .
  • You press and hold the Alexa Voice button and give a voice command like, "Go Home" or "Open Prime Video."
  • 15 minutes of inactivity on Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Generation or after a few minutes of no user presence detected in room.
  • A routine deactivates it.

Adjust Start and Timeout for Ambient Experience

You can adjust when Ambient Experience starts and how long it stays active.

Note: The Ambient Experience timeout setting is only available on Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd Generation).

If you haven't set a duration, the Ambient Experience starts after 5 minutes of inactivity and times out after a few minutes of no motion detected in the room.

To adjust start and timeout from Ambient Experience screen:

  1. Press the Menu button on your remote.
  2. Select Ambient Preferences.
  3. Select Advanced Settings.
  4. Select:
    1. Ambient Experience Start to adjust how long the device must be inactive before the Ambient Experience launches automatically.
    2. Ambient Experience Timeout to adjust how long the device must be inactive before the Ambient Experience times out.
  5. Select the new duration.

To adjust start and timeout from Fire TV Home screen:

  1. Go to Settings on your Fire TV.
  2. Select Display & Audio.
  3. Select Ambient Experience.
  4. Select Ambient Preferences.
  5. Select Advanced Settings.
  6. Select:
    1. Ambient Experience Start to adjust how long the device must be inactive before the Ambient Experience launches automatically.
    2. Ambient Experience Timeout to adjust how long the device must be inactive before the Ambient Experience times out.
  7. Select the new duration.

Important: Ambient Experience may increase the energy consumption of your Fire TV device. You can turn off this feature at any time from the Settings menu. Go to Display & Audio, and then Ambient Experience.
