Silk Browser Basics on Fire Tablet

Search the web, save bookmarks, and view your browsing history using the Silk browser on your Fire tablet.

Note: An internet connection is required to browse the web.

The Silk Home page appears when you open the Silk browser for the first time or when you open a new browser tab. If you close the Silk browser, the last website you were viewing automatically appears the next time you open the browser.

Functionality

Details

Search the web

Enter a URL or search term in the search field at the top of the page. Silk suggests sites based on your default search engine and browsing history. Select a suggested website or tap the arrow icon on the keyboard when you're finished typing.

Zoom in and out of a web page

To zoom in, pinch outward with two fingers. To zoom out, pinch inward with two fingers.

Note: Some web pages don’t support this functionality.

Scroll up and down on a web page

Swipe your finger up and down the screen to scroll.

Open or close a tab

To open a new tab, tap the + icon.

To close a tab, tap the x on a tab.

To close all tabs at once, tap and hold the x on a tab, then tap Close all tabs.

Reading View

On select pages, tap to remove most graphics, advertisements, or links from a web article.

Save to Reading List

Save a page to your Reading List for offline viewing. Tap the Menu icon, tap Reading List, then tap Save to Reading List.

To view your Reading List, swipe from the left edge of the screen and tap Reading List. You can also access your Reading List from the Silk Home page.

Private Browsing

While viewing a web page, tap the Menu icon or swipe from the left edge of the screen, and then tap New Private Tab to browse the web without saving your visit history.

Bookmarks

Add a bookmark, or edit an existing bookmark for a web page. You can also pin a web page to your favorites list so that it displays in the Home tab section of the Silk Home page.

Print

Connect to a wireless printer to print the web page from your device. You can also save a web page as a PDF for offline viewing.

Share

To share the page via email or a social network, select the Menu icon and then the share icon.

Request Mobile or Desktop site

Tap the Menu icon, then select either Desktop Site or Mobile Site to view the Desktop or Mobile version of a web page.

Tip: Select Mobile Site for a mobile-improved experience.

Find in page

Find a word or phrase on the page. Tap the Menu icon and select the search icon.

Browsing History

Tap the Menu icon or swipe from the left edge of the screen and then tap History for a list of web pages you've visited.

Dark Theme/Light Theme

View your tabs and menu screens on either a dark or light background. Use the Menu icon or swipe from the left edge of the screen, then select the Dark Theme or the Light Theme.

Note: The background color of the web pages you visit won’t change.

Silk Bookmarks

Silk Bookmarks is a Chrome browser extension. It allows you to save a copy of your Chrome bookmarks to your Amazon account, so they’re available across your Fire tablets.

  • Import bookmarks - Import bookmarks from your Chrome desktop browser using the Silk Bookmarks browser extension.
  • Using Silk Bookmarks - Review your imported Chrome bookmarks in the Silk browser Bookmarks page. Use Import Chrome bookmarks from the bookmarks menu icon.
